French Drain

The term came from a book! The book was “Farm Drainage: The Principles, Processses, and Effects of Draining Land with Stones, Wood, Plows, and Open Ditches, and Especially with Tiles; Including Tables of Rain-Fall, Evaporation, Filtration, Excavation, Capacity of Pipes; Cost and Number to the Acre, of Tiles, &C., &C., and More Than 100 Illustrations” by Henry French. What a mouthful. The book was published in 1860.

In the book, French describes the way that he was able to drain his cellar dry, using a basic tile “drain.” Even two years after its installation, he had no water. This finally provided a dry storage place for preserves, vegetables and more.
